Abstract
Even after the
best form of treatment (Speech + Psycho + Group Therapy) relapse is very
common. 84 cases of Moderate-Severe degree of stuttering were the subjects
of this study. All possible discussions were made to exclude any physiological
or neurological disorder. The Stuttering was confirmed by the detailed
consultation with the case and family. The period of study is 7 years 1987
to 1993 and the age of the cases varied from 13-42 years with the maximum
incidence between 18 to 30 years. 20% of the cases were female. Initially
speech organs exercise (tension - relaxation) and controlled rate of speech
was taught. Regular speech - psycho therapy for continuous one month and
maintenance therapy (approx. 1/4th period of the onset duration) yielded
much better results as compared to non-maintenance therapy.
