Abstract
Maintenance
therapy has been shown to play a vital role in the total behaviour modification
of the stutterer. Twenty four cases of moderate – severe degree of stuttering
were the subjects of this study. Any physiological, neurological deficit
was ruled out in the subjects. The period of the study was from July 1994
to January 1997 and the age varied from 14-28 years with 25% being female.
Various activities used for maintenance therapy included stage performance
as enacting plays and participation in group discussions and picnics. Enacting
a play proved to be an extremely valuable therapy in building fluency,
confidence and cultivating emotional dominance in stutterers speech. Subjects
reported an increase in mental equilibrium while handling day to day decisions
and interactions.
